EL-SHAMY, Lina
PhD Student
History of graphic design, 19th and 20th century Arab visual culture, (post)colonial art, comparative visual studies
Lina is a graphic artist, filmmaker, and writer/researcher. Originally hailing from Alexandria, Egypt, and having lived through several ‘radically’ and seemingly polarized cultures, Lina aspires to become a comparative visual historian (specializing in 20th-century Arab art and culture), while continuing to find ways of mobilizing her scholarship into film and graphic art. In her work, she tries to make relevant the study of ‘faraway’ cultures by localizing them – a process she calls ‘self-orientalism’.

I am interested in depictions and engagements with different kinds of land use in art and visual culture. I am currently working on how agriculture, mining, oil extraction, and preservation in the American West are visualized from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
